Gaustatoppen 1883 m.o.h

Gaustatoppen 1883 m.o.h

Gaustatoppen is as high as 1883 m and is a well-known landmark in the heart of Telemark.

It’s a popular destination for both national and international guests who are keen to walk the 3h walk to reach the top.

Around the turn of the century (1900) it was popular amongst well heeled citizens of Oslo to visit purpose-built hotels which catered for relaxation and convalescence. All surrounded by beautiful nature and abundance of fresh air. Tuddal Høyfjellshotel was top of the pops in its formative heydays for these period qualities.

Today, as back then, our guests appreciate the fresh air and long hikes in the beautiful terrain in the area. To reach Gaustatoppen there are several routes to choose from, however, most hikers choose to start from the parking area next to Stavsro. This is a 10 min. drive from the hotel. You can easily find the various routes in the area on the website ut.no. https://ut.no/turforslag/11506...

Gaustatoppen turisthytte

Gaustatoppen Turisthytte is unique! Located on the top of the mountain you will find a cottage run by The Norwegian Trekking Association. You are welcome to enjoy refreshments after your climb to the top either inside the cottage or outside. Their waffels are a must while resting in the sun and taking in the majestic views. From the top you can see 1/6 of Norway, and all the way to Sweden on a clear day!

Gaustabanen

All ways lead to Rome they say…. Well, we like to say they lead to Gaustatoppen. Not only can you climb the various routes to the top, you can also use Gaustabanen, a train leading you to the core of the mountain. There you will change over to a funicular that will lift you all the way to the top! It’s as fabulous and terribly exciting as it sounds, and you ought to try it.

Contrary to most mountaintops, Gaustatoppen is accessible for people with disabilities due to Gaustabanen. Everyone can reach the top!

The Gaustabanen turisthytte will frequently invite early birds for breakfast to experience the sun rise from the top as well as a late dinner to overlook the sun set.

If you are of the more adventurous type, you might want to book the “Top secret dinner”, an experience that will take you through the story of the cold war and the reason why this tunnel was built in the 1950s.
